After a long 5 months football is finally back. NFL preseason football kicks off this weekend and I couldn’t be happier. I know it’s only the preseason but if you’re a real football fan you cannot wait to see the players your team picked in the draft finally hit the field and play in an actual game.
The preseason is where the players who seem like they are unlikely to make the regular season roster are given the opportunity to showcase their abilities to their coaches and hopefully make their dreams of playing in the NFL a reality. Many late round draft picks have seized their opportunity to play in the NFL and have even become superstar players. One example of a player who became a superstar is Stefon Diggs.
Stefon Diggs was drafted in the 5th round (146 overall) of the 2015 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings. He currently plays for the Buffalo Bills and has 492 career receptions, 6,158 receiving yards and 38 touchdowns. In 2020, Stefon Diggs had a career high in receptions catching 127 passes and a career high in receiving yards with 1,535 yards. That’s pretty good for a guy drafted in the 5th round (If I do say so myself). Diggs will no doubt have another great year with Josh Allen as his QB and I can’t wait to see what he does (especially if he is on my fantasy team again).
The best late round draft pick ever is of course Tom Brady. Everyone knows his story of being drafted in the sixth round (199 overall) of the 2000 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots. But I think my favorite story of Tom Brady is when he walked up to Robert Kraft after being drafted and told him he was the best draft selection the Patriots ever made and then he went on to win 6 Super Bowls for New England. It’s just an unbelievable story and I love it.
So, who will be the late round draft choice that proves all the doubters wrong this year? I’m not entirely sure who is the answer to this question, but I can say I will be watching the preseason to get an early look at the potential break out candidates.
