With Deshaun Watson’s pending legal issues (22 civil lawsuits claiming sexual assault) and his offseason trade request I am not surprised the Houston Texans have named Tyrod Taylor as their starting quarterback for the upcoming season. “Tyrod Taylor will start at quarterback for us, for sure, “Culley said, via Sarah Barshop of ESPN. Taylor completed 66 percent of his passes this preseason for 81 yards and had 1 carry for 6 yards. He had no touchdowns but more importantly he had no interceptions. He had limited playing time this preseason but performed well enough to earn the starting job. Watson has not played for the Texans since last year and the Texans will sit him this year.
Houston has unsuccessfully been trying to trade Watson (especially lately) and I do not blame other NFL teams for not giving Houston the massive return they want for him. No one is going to want to trade a lot of assets, such as multiple first round draft picks and maybe a player or two, for a player who will most likely be put on the commissioner’s exemption list at some point this season. Now if he were to somehow clear up his legal issues, which is highly unlikely, I could see a team like the Philadelphia Eagles trading for him. For now, he will sit and watch as the NFL kicks off this weekend and 32 teams begin their pursuit for a Lombardi trophey.
The Texans did draft a quarterback in the 2021 NFL draft selecting Davis Mills from Stanford with the 67th overall pick. The third-round pick completed only 47 percent of his passes in the preseason for 333 yards and had a total of 25 rush yards. He threw 2 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. Davis Mills has the potential to be a starting quarterback in the NFL as long as he stays healthy and sits behind Taylor this year soaking up as much information as he can. I will say if Taylor does not perform well in the first half of the season or if he gets hurt, we could see Mills play for the Texans this year.
